In the novel and the video game Metro 2033, Ostankino Tower has a prominent role, being the epicentre for the final act of the story. Artyom has to reach the highest point to get a clear view of the Dark Ones' hive, and signal in the missile strike from D6.

OverviewEdit

Ostankino Tower, or Останкинская телебашня in Russian (Ostankinskaya telebashnya), is a real free-standing television and radio tower in Moscow. It stands 540 metres (1772 ft) tall and was designed by Nikolai Nikitin. Until 1976, it was the tallest single standing structure in the world. On August 27, 2000 there was a fire accident killing 4 people: 3 firefighters and a woman who was in charge of the elevator controls. In the Metro universe the Ostankino tower is severely damaged and deteriorating, but is still standing and is one of the highest points in post-apocalyptic Moscow. Despite being near the epicenter of the explosion, the tower is not completely destroyed. The tower itself is very dilapidated, and most of the internal structures such as the stairs and elevators have been completely ruined. It is unknown how Miller and Artyom get down from the top, as the stairs have been destroyed, and even when the elevator is functional, it would be very volatile and dangerous.

Metro Last LightEdit

While never directly appearing as a location to move to, Ostankino Tower is seen in a flashback during Artyom and trek through the River of Fate to find The Dark One. It is also visible from Botanichesky Sad during the Ashes level.

TriviaEdit

  • It has the largest population of demons in the game, mostly likely due to its height allowing the demons to nest and escape from predators as none of the other mutant species can fly or would unlikely be able to climb that high.
  • Most of the upper half of the tower has been damaged or completely destroyed, with many stairways, railings and even entire walls missing or in a state of complete dilapidation.
  • Sometimes, when approaching the tower, the highest points may be invisible and will reappear the closer you get to it. This is because the tower is so big the top half is outside of the game's draw distance.
  • In the Gospel According to Artyom: Artyom, Pavel and Uhlman simply climb down a ladder and back into the Metro after the destruction of the Dark Ones.
