The Moscow State University (Russian: Московский Государственный Университет) is a location in the Metro Series and in the real world. In the Metro, rumour has it that the brightest minds of the city still live there and, isolated from the rest of the underground, still live in relative peace and harmony 20 years after the war, though this is somewhat a myth - an urban legend.

Overview

"Emerald City" takes its name from a Russian children's book, a remake of Baum's Wizard of Oz, called Wizard of Emerald City. The Emerald City is a half-mythical state rumored to exist in the three cut-off deep stations below the Moscow State University, where all the scientists from the University dwell, governed by Deans and the Rector. This rumour is only that, since no one, not even the Red Line, knows what is out there, however, it gets passed around in the still-surviving intelligentsia circles. However, there is no reason why there could not be survivors in those stations - deep enough to avoid radiation and mutants, while having access to the surface, former students and teachers could live there well enough with the knowledge of the old world.

The myth also involves scientific activity that is still going strong there, and that the Emerald City has developed special protective suits to cross the river. Their scouts occasionally visit the rest of the Metro, possibly indicating where the rumours began. Talking about the Emerald City in the proximity of the Red Line is not exactly a good idea, as Mikhail Porfirevich found out. Whatever the Red Line knows about it, they are very hostile to any mention of this mythical state. Perhaps the reasons lie in the fact that this rumour was used as anti-Red line propaganda during the Hansa-Red Line War by Porfirevich.

In Metro 2034, Leonid takes Sasha to Sportivnaya station, claiming to have contact with Emerald City. Leonid takes Sasha to a sealed off-tunnel that leads into the university. The door has a buzzer, but no one has ever gotten a response from it.

Connecting Station

Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills) station was located on a bridge over the Moskva river that collapsed soon after or during the war effectively cutting off the University from the rest of the Metro. The map on the cover of the Metro 2033 novel states that Universitet, Prospekt Vernadskovo and Yugo-Zapadnaya stations are all University controlled stations and are called Izumrydniy Gorod (or the Emerald City).
